Keep America Beautiful and Coca-Cola Thursday announced the recipients of recycling bins designed specifically for placement at public spaces, schools and universities. The recycling bins are thanks to a grant made possible by Keep America Beautiful and The Coca-Cola Foundation.
The 2015 grant recipients were chosen by Keep America Beautiful based on need, recycling experience and program sustainability.
Pennsylvania recipients are: City of Allentown Department of Parks and Recreation; Washington Township, Berks County; and Moshannon Valley School District, Clearfield County.
“We have a wildly successful curbside recycling program and a drop-off center, but we recognized an opportunity to do more. Cedar Beach Park is a popular sports venue that hosts the well-known Stellar “Catch a Rising Star” Basketball Showcase, Lehigh Valley SportsFest and summer basketball leagues,” said Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski. “These bins will help us keep thousands of plastic bottles and cans from our competitors and fans out of the waste stream and help keep Cedar Beach Park beautiful.”
Through the 2015 Coca-Cola/Keep America Beautiful Recycling Bin Grant Program, 3,662 recycling bins went to colleges and universities, and 1,638 bins went to local governments and nonprofit organizations nationwide. Since 2010, Pennsylvania has received $87,420 in bin grant awards, providing 724 bins for the collection of beverage container recyclables.
“Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful is grateful to be a part of the Keep America Beautiful national network that allows us access to tools and resources for the volunteers and communities we serve,” said Shannon Reiter, President of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, “These grants will play a key role in not only improving recycling in our communities but also will leverage additional investment in public space recycling across the Commonwealth.”
