The Department of Environmental Protection will host a public hearing at 5:00 p.m. on May 5 to outline a proposal for an interim response at the General Alloy Casting Company Site.
The site contains old foundry waste and is located on the side of a steep ravine above a stream in Rochester Township, Beaver County.
The public hearing will be held at the Rochester Township Municipal Building located at 1013 Elm Street, Rochester, PA.
The site had been used for the disposal of foundry waste by General Alloy Casting Company starting in about 1947. The site contains toxic concentrations of metals and chemicals that are a threat to human health and to McKinley Run, the stream that runs below the site.
DEP, working under the authority of the Hazardous Sites Cleanup Act has developed a plan to stabilize the area and protect the stream. HSCA is the 1988 law that authorizes the agency to perform cleanup of hazardous waste sites and recover costs from responsible parties, if possible.
Members of the public will have an opportunity to provide testimony at the hearing. Those wishing to make comments should register, in writing, with Community Relations Coordinator John Poister, in care of DEP’s Southwestern Regional Office, 400 Waterfront Drive, Pittsburgh PA 15222, or by phone at 412-442-4203 before 3:00 p.m. on the day of the hearing. There will also be an opportunity to register on-site at the hearing.
Those unable to attend the hearing should submit written comments to Terry Goodwald, Project Manager, Department of Environmental Protection, 400 Waterfront Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.
