Volunteers from the departments of Environmental Protection and Transportation, along with members of the local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary participated in the Morrison “Sunshine” Park Cleanup on April 27 in Harrisburg, Dauphin County.
DEP Secretary E. Christopher Abruzzo as well as Secretary of Administration Kelly Logan pitched in during the cleanup.
“Cleaning up your community and working to improve outdoor recreation areas, like parks, is what Earth Month is all about,” Abruzzo said. “If you haven’t already participated in a cleanup in your community, I encourage you to do so.”
More than 50 volunteers removed 70 bags of trash from the park and surrounding areas. Volunteers also removed four car tires and a bumper.
DEP’s regional offices also participated in cleanup events this month. Of the three DEP-sponsored cleanups, 83 staffers retrieved nine tires and picked up 124 bags of trash from roadsides, parks and waterways across the state.
The DEP-sponsored cleanup was held in honor of Earth Month. The theme for Earth Month is “Pick it up PA,” to encourage residents to take time to pick up litter around their homes and in public areas.
This cleanup was registered with the Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania. The Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania runs through May 31.
