Students and teachers at Donegal Elementary, Level Green Elementary, Moon Area High School and Keystone Oaks Middle School have accepted the Alcoa Aluminum Can Recycling Challenge and will compete to see who can recycle the most aluminum cans during the 2013-2014 school year.
The competition is sponsored by the Alcoa Foundation and the Pennsylvania Resources Council.

The winner of the Recycling Challenge will receive a cash prize of $750 to use towards a school project, program or field trip!
Through this exciting challenge each school will receive educational sessions with PRC, assistance with setup/implementation of a recycling program, a Recycling is Magic Show as a kick off to the competition, and materials including recycling containers, signage and can crushers.
“Helping schools to recycle aluminum will keep materials out of landfills as well as save energy and natural resources” said Sarah Shea of the PA Resources Council. “Our end goal is to have the participating schools continue recycling aluminum cans long after the contest ends.”
Faculty member Roseann Funyak of Level Green Elementary in the Penn Trafford School District was excited for the school to receive a free assembly program about recycling as part of the program.
“The show was fantastic and I like the idea of getting the message across to the students via entertainment about the importance of recycling,” said Roseann. “It's important to teach the students that we all have a responsibility to protect the earth's resources for future generations.”
Students will begin recycling the aluminum cans this month and the winner will be announced March, 2014.
