House Environmental Committee Meets June 22 On Bill To Protect Military Airspace From Windmills

The House Environmental Resources and Energy Committee is scheduled to meet June 22 to consider House Bill 2367 (Mako-R-Northampton) which would prohibit the construction of wind turbines that negatively affect military installations (sponsor summary).

“Recent proposals to construct windmills on property adjoining Indiantown Gap has raised serious concerns within the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs,” said Rep. Zachary Maki when announcing the bill.  “Recent press reports indicate DMVA is specifically concerned that the construction of windmills within the buffer zone surrounding the Gap will impact helicopter training maneuvers during nighttime hours and increase the risk of accidents.

“With this in mind, I am introducing legislation that would require DEP to consult with the Adjutant General prior to permitting windmills within the flight path or airspace of the Gap.”

The agenda also includes the regular warning-- “And any other business that may come before the committee.”  During budget time, observers should heed that warning.

The meeting will be held in Room 523 Irvis Building starting at 10:00 a.m.  Click Here to watch online.
