PA Emergency Management Agency, DRBC Virtual Hazard Mitigation Workshop Series Starts May 6

The
PA Emergency Management Agency and Delaware River Basin Commission are hosting a series of three virtual Hazard Mitigation Workshops starting on May 6.

The workshops include--

-- May 6: Acquisition & Demolition of Flood Risk Homes, 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. -

The most common hazard mitigation project is acquisition and demolition of flood‐risk homes or “buyouts.”

Acquisition is considered the best mitigation because it eliminates the hazard of flooding in a risk area – no homes, no losses.

Although neither as common nor as effective as acquisition, home elevation is another approach to hazard mitigation. During this one‐hour webinar, PEMA State Hazard Mitigation Officer Tom Hughes will explain the special concerns related to acquisitions and elevations (A&E), what goes into an A&E application, and how PEMA evaluates projects for funding.

-- May 10: Using Green Infrastructure To Mitigate Hazards, 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Hazard mitigation is increasingly combining gray infrastructure with green approaches to mitigate risks associated with flooding. This webinar will focus on green infrastructure projects by FEMA under the BRIC program and how to integrate green and gray infrastructure approaches and maximize benefits for successful project design and applications.

-- June 16: Lessons Learned In The Grant Process, 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.

Get ready for the 2022 Hazard Mitigation Assistance grant application cycle! PEMA and DRBC hosted Hazard Mitigation Plan Implementation and Grant Development (PIGD) workshops in 2021 to help municipalities connect the dots between planning and FEMA funding.

If you attended a PIGD, or are curious about the process, join us to discuss lessons learned, challenges encountered and advice for peers. While the 2021 workshops focused on the upper Delaware River Basin in Pennsylvania, we invite all interested to join us in learning more.
