DCNR Good Natured Blog: Outdoors For All

By Cindy Adams Dunn, DCNR Secretary

We all are struggling with how to respond to issues of racism and inequality in a way that shows solidarity and results in real change.
At DCNR, we are committed to ensuring that our public lands are welcoming to all, that our resources are equitably distributed, and that our workforce is representative and supported.
Change is overdue, so we must act with urgency.
In Pennsylvania, state parks are free and accessible to everyone. However, we know that outdoor recreation and access is not always inclusive, and that in particular, Black people may not feel welcome.
Recreation for All (PDF) -- the title of our Pennsylvania Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan now in its final draft -- outlines a course for the commonwealth to provide new parks and green spaces where they clearly are lacking; and ensures that all people feel invited and engaged in our outdoor spaces by developing strategies to overcome real and perceived barriers through enhanced access, amenities, and programs.
This is our commitment to addressing very large and real challenges.
To join us in this work, read the plan on the DCNR website and send comments as directed.
