Sept. 5 PA Environment Digest Is Now Available

The Sept. 5 PA Environment Digest is now available.  Here are just a few of the headlines--

PJM Thursday released its analysis of the impacts on wholesale electricity costs and grid reliability of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Final Clean Power Plan rule. The report states that, overall, the carbon dioxide emissions reduction goals of the CPP can be achieved within the PJM footprint under each of the seven compliance pathways studied without compromising the fundamental way in which the PJM market operates.
Levelized compliance costs range from $0.61/MWh for a regional compliance pathway to $1.93/MWh for a state compliance pathway that includes the regulation of both new and existing sources.
These costs would be equivalent to 1.1 percent to 3.3 percent, respectively, of the average total wholesale cost of electricity.
For the average Pennsylvania household it would mean from 53 cents to $1.67 cents a month, according to Lindsay Baxter, Energy and Climate Program Manager for the PA Environmental Council.

The PA Environmental Council Monday published a primer on the state’s Uniform Construction Code and how important the state’s uniform building code in particular is to an effective strategy for saving energy.

The nonprofit Energy Coordinating Agency in Philadelphia will hold 3 Breakfast Briefings on The First Fuel: Energy Efficiency September 14, October 18 and November 10.   ECA runs high-impact programs that conserve energy while serving low-income Philadelphians.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful invites all elementary and secondary schools in Pennsylvania to participate in the Litter Free School Zone Program, a comprehensive program designed to teach lessons around recycling, litter awareness, and community stewardship.

Volunteers are needed for this year’s PA Lake Erie International Coastal Cleanup to be held on September 17 from 9:00 a.m. to noon at a variety of locations along the Lake.

The Department of Environmental Protection will be accepting Section 904 Recycling Performance Grant applications for materials recycled and marketed in 2015 until September 30.

Educators from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation-PA will involve 20 groups of students grades 6 through 12 and one college group from 12 Pennsylvania counties this Fall in exploring local waterways through the Susquehanna Watershed Education Program.

The Stroud Water Research Center will hold a webinar on October 12 to introduce its Wiki Watershed Toolkit to promote freshwater stewardship.  It will start at 3:30 p.m.
